Hiroshima and Nagasaki
The Canadian Peace Congress joins with the world wide movement for peace and nuclear disarmament in a solemn commemoration of the August 6, 1945 US nuclear bombing of the civilian population of Hiroshima and the August 9th 1945 nuclear bombing of the civilian population of Nagasaki. The total number of deaths exceeded 150,000 with at least that number suffering terrible wounds.
The use of atomic weapons on civilian populations will live in infamy as one of the greatest crimes against peace and humanity. The bombings were a cynical abuse of military power by the US ruling elites carried out on the orders of US President Harry S. Truman.
The attacks on the civilian populations of Hiroshima and Nagasaki had nothing to do with the defeat of Japan. The bombings came a few weeks after high level meetings between Truman and Stalin on a joint plan to end the war against Japan and were a cynical attempt by the US imperialists to use nuclear superiority to shape post-war international relations. It did neither. The Soviet Union quickly developed its own nuclear capability and the nuclear arms race ensued and continues to this day.
Today the people of Japan lead a world-wide movement to ban all nuclear weapons and to remove all US military bases from their territory.
The Canadian Peace Congress joins with all of the member organizations of the World Peace Council to express our solidarity and support for the Japan Peace Council and through them to the entire peace movement of Japan.
Together, we can ban all nuclear weapons. We will not rest until that happens.
