WPC statement on the Foreign Military Bases to be installed in Colombia
The WPC rejects vehemently the US plans to install new Military Bases in Colombia through the use of the Colombian military installations of Palanqero, Apiay, Malambo, Cartagena and Malaga.
These new Bases are aiming in the transformation of Colombia into a tactical operational center in Latin America. The Agreement signed between the governments of the USA and Colombia for ten years long will allow the deployment of 1.400 men (civil and troops) in Colombia, ranging very high in the list of countries where the USA are operating militarily.
The WPC emphasizes that these developments are to be seen with the increasing activities of the Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) of the USA, which is expanding its military activities over the continent, with new Military Bases as well as with the reactivation of the 4th Fleet of the US Navy.
US Imperialism is aiming in creating a “belt” around certain states in the region of South America along with other multiple subversive imperialist actions as observed in recent years in the region, escalating the threats against the peoples, the peace and security on the whole continent.
The WPC condemns the war drive policies of the old and new US administration towards the peoples of Latin America and expresses its solidarity with all the peace loving forces in the region, especially in Colombia, in their fight against imperialist domination and foreign interference, for the right of the peoples to determine their future sovereign and free from any foreign military presence and threat.
We salute and join the campaign of the World Federation of Democratic Youth (WFDY) for the continental day of action against the US Military Bases in Colombia on the 9th September 2009 and call upon all members and friends of the WPC to take up initiatives on this occasion.
