Statement of the WPC on the International Day of Peace 21st September 2009
On the occasion of the “International Day of Peace” the World Peace Council salutes the millions of peace fighters in dozens of countries, which are struggling daily for peace and justice, against imperialist domination for the sovereign rights of the peoples. The WPC is stressing the need for the immediate end of all imperialist aggressions, foreign occupation and wars in the whole world. The peace loving people of the world which consist the vast majority of humanity are rejecting the war-drive policies which are aiming in the control of energy resources, markets and spheres of influence. Peace and security is being under direct or indirect threat by the imperialist forces, led by the USA.
The military expenditure last year (2008) reached the new record of 1,46 trillion USD, half of them spent by the US administration alone. At the same more than 1 billion people live in absolute poverty today on the planet.
The “International Day of Peace” proclaimed in 1981 by the United Nations would be only another “International Day” if we would close our eyes in front of the reality which is more and more brutal and bloody.
Commemorating the International Peace Day, the WPC feels the need to remind and demand the unconditional withdrawal of all foreign occupation forces from Iraq and Afghanistan, the withdrawal of the Israeli occupation troops and settlements from Palestine as precondition for the establishment of an independent state with East Jerusalem as Palestinian capital. We further demand the cease of occupation of part of the Cyprus Republic and of the Western Sahara and express our solidarity with the peoples struggling for their just causes in all parts of the world.
The WPC underlines the fact that Peace is under permanent threat by the US, NATO and other foreign military bases and denounces the militarization of the European Union and its military presence out of its borders.
This year while we are observing the 61st anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the UN, we feel the need to express our deep disagreement and anger with the violation of the founding Charter of the UN and the International Law and the abuse of the UN by the Imperialist forces under the “New World Order”.
The WPC supports the establishment of an International Order of Peace and Justice with the respect to the founding charter of the UN, with the right of each and every people to determine their future without foreign interference, freely and in full sovereignty.
Let us not allow the “International Day of Peace” to become another “alibi” for the continuation of the suffering of millions of people, while expressing only wishes and nice words.
The WPC calls upon all peoples of the world: “Let us fight together against imperialist war and occupation, for peace and friendship of the peoples” The World Peace Council 20th September 2009
