Jens Stoltenberg, Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, will be in Ottawa to meet with Justin Trudeau as part of his tour to both the USA and Canada. As we all know Stoltenberg is the useful idiot who is a parrot for Washington performing on the world stage. This “visit” is another step towards expanding war and aggression by imperialism’s military force and an effort to push Canada to meet the minimum NATO requirement of diverting 2% of GDP on wasteful military spending. The Canadian Peace Congress condemns this provocative visit. War mongers are not welcome in Canada.

Stoltenberg, described  as a “right wing social democrat”, originally was a high ranking member of the Norwegian Labour Party serving as prime minister of Norway on two occasions. Under his leadership Norway’s war budget increased dramatically. Currently it has one of the highest per capita “defence” spending in NATO.

Stoltenberg became General Secretary of NATO on 28 March 2014 shortly after the fascist coup in Ukraine in February. He did not condemn the overthrow of the democratically elected government of President Victor Yanukovych.

During his compliant four terms as General Secretary Stoltenberg has proven himself to be a warmonger of the highest order. He has consistently pushed for more money to be spent on “defence” and was pleased to announce that “400 billion U.S. dollars“ will be wasted on NATO by 2024.

He consistently argues that NATO must prepare to confront the Russian Federation in what would certainly be a nuclear war. In Ukraine, he supported the failed Ukrainian offensive of 2023 that saw tens of thousands of Ukrainians killed and he currently advocates for NATO weapons to be used to strike targets deep inside Russia.

He has pushed for countries like Georgia and Ukraine to join NATO in a continued effort to surround the Russian Federation with hostile forces. Similarly, he has played a role in the establishment of NATO battle groups in Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia. He welcomed Finland and Sweden into NATO in 2022.

Ever the loyal servant of U.S. imperialism he has spoken out about the need to “address the rise of China”.

We must never lose sight of the fact that imperialism is the greatest enemy of the peoples of the world. NATO kills on an industrial level! These estimates are very low: Yugoslavia: 140,000; Libya: 30,000; Iraq: 1,033,000; Afghanistan: 176,000; Ukraine was prohibited from signing a peace treaty in March 2022 and more than 500,000 have been killed in NATO’s proxy war against the Russia Federation; are just a few of the examples.

The Canadian Peace Congress joins with other peace loving organizations and individuals in opposing the entry of the war monger Jens Stoltenberg into Canada. Rather than welcoming the Washington’s parrot Secretary General of NATO Canada should withdraw from this imperialist organization which is terrorizing the world. NATO is the terrorist organization that threatens peace everywhere.

Canada needs an independent foreign policy based on peace, disarmament and solidarity. Such an approach would allow the billions of dollars wasted on war preparations to be used for civilian needs such as healthcare, education, housing, clean drinking water for First Nations peoples, and addressing the real concerns around climate change.
